Svytury’s Baltijos

December 11th, 2010 No comments

Birdsboro Beverage Company had a beer tasting today.  It was before noon, but I won’t get into that.  After some mild twisting of my arm, I decided to give it a go.

They were offering some different varieties of Svytury, a Lithuanian beer company located in Klaipėda, Lithuania.

They were offering:

  • Baltas – an unfiltered wheat beer.
  • Baltijos – a dark red ale; similar to an Oktoberfest or Märzen.
  • Ekstra Draught – a mild, slightly hoppy lager in the Dortmunder style.
Due to my strong aversion to wheat beer, I only sampled the Baltijos and the Ekstra Draught.  I liked both beers, but the Baltijos was far better.  The Ekstra Draught was very pale yellow in color with little to no head.  It was a mild lager with a plain finish.  It reminded me a bit of Yuengling Light Lager.
The Baltijos pours a deep amber with a thick creamy head. It has rich and sweet taste of caramel, which is felt in the mouth for a long period of time.  It’s a good tasting beer, and at 5.2% alcohol you can drink a few without getting into trouble.  The bottles are 500mL which is a proper pint.  The bottles are specially designed and quite attractive; just a bit of foil around the neck for branding.

Beck’s Oktoberfest

For the third year in a row, Beck’s Oktoberfest is still one of the best brews of the season.

Warsteiner Oktoberfest

September 15th, 2010 No comments

After having Beck’s, Stoudts, Sam Adams, Iron Hill, and a few other Oktoberfest brews, I decided to try something new this September.  The beer pours a rich deep amber color with a modest white head.  The first taste had me twist my head just a bit.  The taste is grassy and floral as I expected, but the finish has a slightly spicy taste to it which was unexpected.  The hops are well balanced with the maltiness of the beer, but unfortunately neither stand out as much as I would have liked.

Another oddity is that halfway through the first beer, I can’t tell if I like it or not.  It’s not a bad beer, but it’s also not one that stands out.  In my opinion, Beck’s and Stoudts have far superior Oktoberfest brews.

Well I have 23 more to drink, but I think I’ll pass on this beer in the future.

Finally got around to picking up a case of Stoudt’s Oktober Fest.  It’s still a high quality brew that never disappoints.

Beck’s Oktoberfest

Just a quick note to say that Beck’s Oktoberfest is as good this year as it was last year.  I can’t wait for Stoudts to distribute theirs.

Sol

April 12th, 2009 No comments

Sol was recommended to me by my wife’s cousin, and what a great recommendation.  This Mexican import is a great, light tasting lager that is easily the best Mexican beer I have had.  It compares with Tecate and Dos Equis.   Mild in flavor, with a crisp bite on the way down.  This will make a great summer picnic brew.  The beer pours a clear golden yellow, with a fizzy white head.

I highly recomend this beer, and for those of you still drinking Corona (shudder.), consider this alternative.  I am going to get another right now.

Intercourse Bareville Pilsener

Intercourse Bareville Pilsener

I regret having ordered this beer.  It was pale in color with a tall, white head.  It had an odd aroma and a finish that made me smack my lips and say, “What is this?”

I wouldn’t wish this beer on anyone.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro

Peroni Nastro Azzurro

Peroni Nastro Azzurro

Another beer I had at Da Vinci’s Pub was Peroni Nastro Azzuro at the advice of a colleague.  It poured a clear gold color with a tall, bright white head.  This beer had a definite macro brew ‘nothing special’ flavor.   The only difference between this and other mass produced American lagers is that this lager has a slight hop finish at the end.

Magic Hat #9

March 19th, 2009 1 comment

While having dinner at Da Vinci’s Pub in Collegeville, PA, I browsed the beer selection, and choose a different beer each time.  The first beer I decided upon was Magic Hat #9.  Although I am not a big fan of fruit beers, this brew was well balanced and the citrus flavor in the beer did not overpower the other flavors of the beer.  It pours a nice amber color with a small head.  It is a full bodied brew that finishes with a nice hoppiness.

Tröegs Dead Reckoning Porter

Dead Reckoning Porter

Dead Reckoning Porter

First off… damn good dark beer!  Tröegs Dead Reckoning Porter is hands-down the best porter I have had…ever.  If someone has had better, please let me know, because this beer has become my new benchmark.  The beer pours a nice dark brown with a thick tan-colored head.  The beer is solid with a robust roasted malt and chocolate flavor.  It finishes with a bitter bite from the hops.  I would drink this again, and again, and again, and … well you get the point.
